Should education be free for everyone or should education cost something?

Digital and free of charge

That’s what it will be eventually for most of the population. But in-person education is just too valuable to go away. And it will probably cost something.

Of course, teachers deserve high compensation for their time and effort

I agree. They should be paid more than they are now. The problem is that poor people are excluded. So education is one of the few things that I think society should pay for. The reason is that a well educated population is good for everyone. No one wants to live among stupid people.

Even if no tuition is charged, true education will always require putting in the time and energy to understand... #ProofOfWork

Apart from that of course

If the state pays, then you owe the state something. Probably military time

The state can’t pay. It doesn’t have money. Society pays via taxes

People can’t pay directly to your student account. All the taxes go into the custody of the state. It is the state’s money at that point.

And the state chooses to spend it how it wants because it is their money then

It is the states money at that point. That’s true. Like when I steal your iPhone it is mine then. I’ll give you that

Exactly. So the state is paying the teachers and school to educate you. But this “free” education is a benefit of being a citizen. And there are costs of being a citizen too.

The cost is the tax

It depends on how ‘everyone’ assigns value. If ‘value’ is only denominated by culture in monetary terms than education should cost money.

IMHO our most precious human resource is our time/attention, education already costs this. If we value time and wisdom and wise and knowledgeable others are willing to give us this/these for free, than education all ready costs all it needs to cost.

If wise and knowledgeable people are not willing to share time and wisdom without monetary compensation than market forces (not government) will and should dictate the monetary cost of education.
