first time I checked Primal out it logged me in automatically somehow (thru alby perhaps). But doesn't appear to be a login or logout button anywhere I could find

Use an extension such as nos2x or alby to store your private key and the first time you visit primal it will ask you for permission to sign events. Then, it will sign you in automatically moving forward.
