An energy organization charging different rates for different uses of energy, sets a precedent that the policy of price rates of energy can be used for economic intervention — especially if there is a monopoly.

This is a reality for those that reside in Chelan County and Douglas County in Washington State and have electric power provided by the PUDs generated from the hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River.

If a person or organization is mining #bitcoin with electricity from the Chelan County PUD, the electricity rates increase from 2.65 cents per kWh to 7.89 cents per kWh (as of July, 2023).

Unless it's a mining business, how would they know what someone is using the power for?

Yeah, I assume there are many people that are mining that way.

However, there are interesting mining business opportunities that would be possible with improved communication with the PUDs. For example, balancing the load on the grid at high efficiency.
