nos.lol is redundant there since filter nostr wine do their job on that other relay o7 unless I'm missing something.
It's true. You can get rid of a ton of spammers by dropping just a couple of the default relays.
I wish there were an easy way to determine which relays did anything about spammers. They make the global feed almost useless with the default settings.
In turn, that makes if much harder for people to get started and find people they want to follow.
The secret to global is paid relays. People are used to having everything for free and being the product, here it can be different but it's a different paradigm and we need to educate.
Do paid relays typically have a way to try before you buy?
How would one find a paid relay that has people posting abount things that align with their interests? Sports, politics, tech news, plant stuff... we all have our interests and frequently don't want to see uninteresting (to us) posts.
There is no free trial, you have to pay to view.
I believe we still don't have segmented relays, my strategy is to follow affinity and subscribe to the most popular relays, so I'm sure I'll be well fed.

I like to test relays, I think I found a good combination. I suggest making a backup first because I lost some followed during the tests.
Summarizing a little my strategy.
nos.lol -> I use it for my personal feed, it's the most popular free relay, everyone wants to be there, it even comes by default in some clients, so I guarantee that I won't lose the notes of who I follow. I also use it as a backup/redundancy if any relay is down.
relay.nostrplebs.com -> is another great paid relay and has some very interesting services, I leave it activated for my global.
nostr.wine -> another very popular paid relay, I also leave it activated for my global.
filter.nostr.wine -> another paid relay, it is an aggregator, bringing notes from the most popular relays and has a great spam filter, turned on global. I leave it enabled for searches too.
relay.nostr.band -> use more specifically for searches.
nostr.mutinywallet.com -> you can't read from this relay, it just sends my notes to different relays.
Note, you don't want to be in too many relays as it will drain your battery, your data plan and your client may slow down.
