Not familiar with Mainsail, but default linux kernel should recognize the wifi interface, if not you might need to implement some kernel modules

Interface was recognized amd could see my network when I scanned. It just would not connect.

Nope, the exact same rpi connected just by picking a different OS out of the raspi-imager list.

hm could be your AP only supports WPA3 and your OS uses a lower one...

I've run into issues with wpa3 and wpa2/wpa3 mixed before. Raspberry pis, even 5s, don't do wpa3 at all yet as far as I know. I run a wpa2 ssid for old devices and a wpa3 ssid for newer devices that can support it. I was using the wpa2 network.
