i can’t get over how helpful AI voice chat for language learning is.

immersion is best, but you can also sit around at home doing chores and just practice dynamic conversation about literally anything in any language, asking for explanations or translations in realtime in either language with 0 embarrassment or reservations or face lost.

you can also tune it to overlook or correct pronunciation mistakes. There’s almost no lag. You can ask it to favor the most common words and phrases in certain dialects too, or to tune to your CEFRL

The irony is the necessity of learning other languages trends to zero… but that’s no fun!

I cannot get over how helpful AI is at helping learning a new programming language

And become more respectful for those developer working 10 years ago when you don’t have editors fancy like today, no LLM and you need to read all docs by yourself

🫣

mythical level of respect for devs, even post ai.

I’ve put concerted effort in to learn to code a few times.. get distracted by like windows and life and such and especially knowing I could just hire or befriend dedicated talent. writing this out makes me annoyed tho, what language would you start with?

Python☺️I gave up more than 10 times before Python. Though it is criticised a lot for being slow and messy

I agree. https://blog.duolingo.com/video-call/ offers this, but it's for Max subscribers which is ... expensive 😢

What are you using?

Thanks for the tip. Just tried mandarin with ChatGPT.

Agreed. I have been using ChatGPT to have conversations in Japanese on occasion. Are there any platforms that are any good?

Nothing beats marrying a person who speaks a different language. That'll teach you another language far quicker than AI. You learn new words and phrases faster when you are emotionally connected to those words, and a wife/husband (or friend or relative) gets you more emotionally attached than a robot or a machine. Visiting the country is also more emotive than visiting an AI machine.

AI is overrated in my opinion. I love learning Russian, and I'd say that watching Russian TV or reading Russian literature or listening to Russian music is far more productive than talking Russian to AI.

More and more people speak a second language nowadays, far more than 100 years ago, because technology has made it easier to travel. Second language acquisition is growing, not shrinking.

New business idea:

Want to learn a new language? Rent a bride! 6 months fluency guaranteed or your money back!

New?! Plenty of businesses out there offering foreign brides. You are late to the party.

I don't think there are any that offer short term foreign brides specifically for you to learn a new language. 😄

You could always try the old-fashioned route: befriend someone. Anyone remember writing to 'penpals' in other countries? That was a language learning thing, and it was free

What tools are you using for this? I'd love to set something up like this for myself but I haven't used AI much yet
