I quite like Fevela - the grouping is useful since I follow a bunch of Japanese folk and they love to rapid fire post - more like a chat room.

It also kind of cures doom scrolling as I actually have to click on a person to see more.

My grandparents used to give me gold stars for finishing the leftover cereal milk. So there's that.

I have many thoughts about the Seoul conference, and a lot to contrast with the Tokyo Bitcoin conference and Nostrasia last weekend.

They were all enjoyable conferences but the difference in grass roots communities are apparent. The Seoul scene is full of energy and ready to build on Bitcoin. In Japan I see a similar energy in Nostr, and Bitcoin is more of an afterthought- kind of fascinating. We need more Devs both in Bitcoin and Nostr and I'm grateful for both groups!

Specter and Calvin did an amazing job with the mini conference (of 400 people)! As did all the support staff. Well done.

Seoul mini conference about to start!

Off to Seoul tomorrow for the mini conference. I'm sure I'll some more insights when I return!

昚日は NostrAsia の感想を曞きたしたが、今日は Bitcoin Tokyo の BUIDL Day に぀いお曞きたいず思いたす。

Yesterday I gave my impressions about Nostrasia. Today I'd like to focus on BUIDL day for Bitcoin Tokyo. I have been wanting to visit Tokyo Bitcoin Base since it opened earlier this year - and it has the best first impression, with the Satoshi statue out front!

The interior is very nicely done, with four floors - two of which were used for presentations and one for a networking event after the presentations. As it's mostly a vertical space, and the number of participants that could attend each presentation was limited to 50-70. It felt more like a meetup to me, which made me feel quite comfortable during my panel.

I enjoyed discussing open source grants with Calvin and Seed. I hope the audience took something away from our conversation. I sat in on several other panels, and was surprised that there was a presentation on Silent Payments - something that we're very excited about at OpenSats. I also enjoyed the discussion on why UI/UX is hard to get right and the example of how iconic the mempool blockchain has become.

I had the opportunity to talk to many people - RockStarDev, Luke, Stephan, the Plan B crew and many others! Koji and Teruko gave me some great feedback on why we don't see many OpenSats applicants from Japan (and Korea and Taiwan and many other nearby countries) and some ideas on how to move forward. These conversations alone were worth the trip for me.

The professionalism and friendliness of the staff was apparent - I thought it was a well run event. Unfortunately I was not able to make the main conference day, so I hope everyone enjoyed it!

Now that I’m back in Kyushu, I wanted to write about my experience over the weekend at Nostrasia and Bitcoin Tokyo BUIDL Day. I had so many great conversations and takeaways that I’ll be sharing over the coming days. Let’s start with Nostrasia.

I was pleasantly surprised by Nostrasia—I expected around 50 people, but it was closer to three times that. It was also a bit of a treasure hunt to find the venue; my only clue was a small sign by the elevator. The crowd was roughly 80% Japanese and 20% foreign attendees, whereas Bitcoin BUIDL Day was the opposite ratio.

The venue was a good size for the crowd. The presentation space worked well, and there were a few side areas where people could chat and relax. The hookah room was a nice touch and a great place for conversation. Presentations were scattered throughout the night, along with a live action event featuring a superhero.

I’ve included a few of the more interesting slides from my presentation. These are based on a survey I ran a few weeks ago, asking Japanese developers about their biggest pain points when applying for grants. The first slide roughly translates as:

- I’m not confident my work qualifies as something that can be “supported”

- Communicating in English is difficult

- I don’t know what kinds of projects are eligible

- I’m worried about handling taxes and accounting

- I’m used to working as a full-time employee, so short-term support feels unstable

- I’m unsure if I can continue the work, so I feel guilty accepting funding

I was happy to speak with so many developers and discuss why OpenSats doesn’t see many applications from Japanese developers. It was enlightening for me, and I think there’s more we can do to help. For example, most people didn’t know that OpenSats allows part-time grants.

The main issue is a knowledge gap—many don’t understand what kinds of projects are eligible (see our criteria for more info: https://opensats.org/apply#criteria). I’d wager that more outreach in Japanese would help.

I was glad I could deliver half of my presentation in Japanese, as I really wanted to connect with the Japanese community. I felt my Japanese wasn’t good enough to do the whole thing in Japanese, but maybe next year!

This is already getting a bit lengthy, so I’ll wrap it up for now. Many thanks to the team that ran Nostrasia—it was a great event and I look forward to attending in the future!

I'm sad we don't get to meet up for SatsNFacts next month. Good event. Hope to see some of you all at Nostrasia instead!

Today marks my two year anniversary nostr:nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7ct5d3shxtnwdaehgu3wd3skuep0qyt8wumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcqypu8xwr40lp96ewdj2fef408wy70gd3carf9n6xu7hrnhq6whpgly925h0z - it's been an insanely fast two years.

I am grateful that I've been able to help contribute to the bitcoin and nostr ecosystems all while living in the mountains of Japan. The OpenSats Ops team are an amazing group to work with - we're a small team but we've done so much together in the last couple of years. And I can't thank nostr:nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7ct5d3shxtnwdaehgu3wd3skuep0qyt8wumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcqyphydppzm7m554ecwq4gsgaek2qk32atse2l4t9ks57dpms4mmhfx5ltf6v enough for bringing me on and for leading us - his belief and passion are at the heart of OpenSats. The time that the Board volunteers to make this all a reality can't be overlooked - without them none of this works. Though sometimes I think my title should be Professional Cat Herder 😅

330+ grants & $30 million in bitcoin sent. It's crazy to think about. The fact that we help support so many families in this space is extremely satisfying. It's a blessing. Thank you to our donors that believe in our mission, as well as our volunteers that help us in the background.

I'm bullish on what we can all accomplish together - onward.

Do you speak Japanese? If not, how did you expect to have a meaningful interaction with Japanese people? The people you're talking about in rural America speak the same language as you.

I've gone many places in Japan and had meaningful interactions. There's definitely more of a divide between strangers and acquaintances than western countries, but I find rural Japan to be far more welcoming. I met a guy that's about 70 the other day while he was out working in his garden and we've chatted a few times over the past week because we're both out early in the morning. He gave me some eggplant and said he'd help me plant some strawberries if I want. We talked about his former job and we talked about our families.

I get what you're talking about - Japan can definitely feel lonely. The big cities are probably quite bad in that regard. But it can be a warm and welcoming country as well.

I met a couple in my neighbourhood in the countryside of Japan. In their 70s.

As I was walking by they were working in a large garden. We had a chat and they said they moved from the city four years ago to start farming. In their 70s.

The husband said each day is hard and I asked what he had did before - he said he worked in semiconductors. The guy retired from what was likely a lucrative career and he and his wife decided to take up farming. In their 70s.

I can't stop thinking about it. No one decides to take up farming when they retire. Most people probably just watch some TV, read a few books and travel. These two decided to try their hand at farming & they seemed happy to be out working the land. In their 70s.

Incredible.

thought my train left at 5p; got to the station at 4.12p. couldn’t find my train on the board, no luck finding my ticket in my email.

checked the train ticketing app, next train is at 4.28p. yep, i can definitely see that train on the board. it’s now 4.16p.

i smash buy a ticket on the app and start looking for the track but cant find it. head to the information desk, ask where the track is. turns out it’s all the way at the end if the station on the second floor. it’s now 4.21p.

i run. make it to the platform, there’s a big flight of stairs up. I have 100lbs of luggage, there’s no time to look for an elevator so i start dragging.

I make it to the platform. it’s now 4.26p. the train is still there. I head to the nearest door and climb on.

ive been on this route before and know that the regular fare cars always get overbooked. you end up spending the 4 and a half hour ride sitting in the aisle. i paid extra for a first class ticket so i could avoid this fate (and tried to arrive forty minutes early rip)

problem is, i have no idea where the first class car is. im stuck in the middle of the train. the aisles are crowded. I’m dragging two oversize suitcases.

i start walking towards the front of the train but it’s ugly. the aisles are strewn with people who are hunkering down for a long ride. they are very much unhappy about me pushing past them. i feel bad but at this point i have paid for not one but two tickets on this train. i am getting to the first class car, preferably before we get to the next station and more people board.

it’s insane to me that the tickets are sold without reservations, this whole situation feels extremely chaotic. sure it’s partly my fault, it’s also completely nuts to me how oversold trains here are.

i only have to walk through three cars to get to the first class car. it’s also packed but there’s no one in the aisle and there is one empty seat next to a sleeping lady. i wake her up to so she’ll move her stuff off the unoccupied seat. there’s even a luggage rack on this car, what a luxury.

luggage stowed, seat acquired,

and we’re on the way to Berlin 🙌 🇚🇿 🚆🇩🇪

Slightly different than Japan!
