PSA: We are going to start blocking anyone using filter.nostr.wine with another users npub. We are already not allowing broadcasts when the pubkey does not match to protect our service from being abused.
All of this will get a lot simpler once we have client authentication. For now we will start dropping the connection + banning IPs. If you get blocked and you’re a legitimate nostr.wine user please DM me after fixing your relay list!
What exactly constitutes the sorts of requests that will get you blocked? There are some interesting use cases for rebroadcasting notes and I know Damus even has a rebroadcast button that rebroadcasts a note to all your relays. Are those edge cases still in bounds?
No issue with these. We will NOT broadcast them to our public relay list but they will not get you blocked or result in any problems.
This is now live. Not going to lie, a bit disappointed so many of you thought it was ok to do this without paying.

what about using someone else’s filter as a paid user? i’ve had a few people that didn’t get the bit about replacing the npub and it may be a noob mistake

How do you know you got blocked?
We are handling it in multiple ways so it can be hard to tell.
If you can’t connect at all or reach the filter.nostr.wine website, you’re blocked.
If you’re successfully connected to someone else’s npub on filter you’re not banned (yet), but we are serving you 0 events.

Depending on the client, you can see the number of errors, so I think you can check it there
This will work for the full IP blocks but not be other form I described.

Hahaha it occurred to me when we released it we were just waiting on that shoe to fall. Seems like there was some abuse around, but yesterday it was shared on a nostrnests and all of a sudden 50+ accounts were doing it.
Lots of them using MULTIPLE filters as well for extra resource usage/load. Not a single one of them even a paid nostr.wine member.
