Some ranchers next to my parent's property had a son in a one child schoolhouse. A NYT reporter decided to do an article on one room schoolhouses and was amazed to find a one student schoolhouse (not the only one in Wyoming). After the interview and article, the boy started getting letters from New York kids asking questions like "What do you do for P.E.?" City folk sure don't understand.
One funny fact: When he was 12 or 13 the ranch only had stick shift vehicles and the teacher didn't know how to drive a stick shift, so he would drive the teacher to a meet-up with other small schools for field trips. (Yes legally you have to be 16, but on middle of nowhere backroads, nobody is paying attention or even really cares.)
