There are different reasons for different languages. If you choose a currently used language, you'll be fine. When starting out, it's more important to learn basic concepts than it is to know (or avoid) a particular language.

If the language you're learning is popular, there will be more resources available. After you are able to write simple programs, you may find that a different language suits your needs better. If so, go for it. Most devs have experience with multiple languages, and most common programming languages are very similar to each other.

Design is almost a separate world, but there is some crossover.
