Looking forward to seeing you in Tokyo for Nostrasia! This is a series of notes with information on Tokyo to entice, support, and convince you to come and join us!
As opposed to the luxurious Hoshinoya Tokyo Japanese-style hotel shared in note nevent1qqs06755yec5dehv7jaycspr2hwa6z8qqptf8z2r5c53u953dhpam8cee8nk3, Sawanoya Ryokan is a family-run, modest ryokan that has been operating for over 70 years, and is located in the Nezu neighborhood of Bunkyo Ward, which is a part of Tokyo's "shitamachi" region.
"Shitamachi" is a Japanese term that refers to the traditional, downtown areas of Tokyo and other cities, known for their narrow streets, small shops, local markets, and close-knit communities.
Sawanoya Ryokan offers a nostalgic and authentic experience, providing guests with traditional tatami rooms, futon bedding, communal baths, and warm hospitality. One can explore the charming atmosphere of Nezu and the surrounding historic neighborhood.
Yanaka Ginza is a popular shopping street located within walking distance from Sawanoya Ryokan. It is a charming, pedestrian-friendly street, lined with numerous shops, eateries, and local vendors.
Their website has not been updated for many many years, but it works! You can also call to make reservations. At least one member of the family speaks English!
