I have a milkweed question.

A. syriaca flowerbuds and immature seeds are useful for food, but from what I’ve heard, it sounds like most or all other milkweeds are poisonous. Are any other milkweed species useful for food?

The flower buds seem to have very low level is cardiac glycosides. I’ve used them in tea. Most noticeable was what appeared to be sugar grains that appeared at the bottom of the glass. Tasted like pure sucrose (sugar)!

Our cows and sheep love milkweed before it hits the reproductive stage. As a result, we've seen a big decrease in milkweed in our fields. We take the pods we can find and spread seeds in areas we know livestock won't graze so that monarchs still have some food.

Another trick to spread milkweed seed is to encourage hunters to use the seed pods when checking wind direction. Critical for #archery #hunting. Milkweed seed pods are very fluffy and delicate, perfect for even the lightest of breezes and they're ready to harvest in time for hunting season.
