I manage the phones (and PCs) of my wife and daughter and the first thing I installed there was an email app.
I am actually having trouble imagining how to use a phone or PC without email. 😅

Somehow sad, but on the other side - email is a privacy nightmare. Even worse than WhatsApp I guess.
WhatsApp is directly linked to your registered telephone number. Hard to be much worse.
And email can be encrypted. Comes standard with Exchange and you can select it is OWA.
Also note: their second option was just using Discord.

Email can be encrypted but it's hard, depends on the provider or software that you use and the problem is key exchange.
I don't like either option, let alone Discord or FSM forbid - Telegram.
But that is a good demonstration of the problem - it's about network effects.

if whatsapp commited to what they say about end to end encryption i think its ok, most people dont know how to use/install email encryption like PGP or S/MIME

Yeah, but who writes their files on their phone? I might edit one that I have online, on my phone, or use the LibreOffice app to correct a typo in some word file, or something.
But are people really writing their presentation slides or spreadsheets over their phone? How is this a thing?
I used to use my moms laptop when I needed some important file until I had my own laptop
Because, writing word, excel or PowerPoint on the phone, who has this kind of patience ? 😂 I once opened excel on my phone and then I closed it 😂

A bunked as email is, at least it's not walled off using a single platform. And technically it's possible to self host, it's just a huge pain. Ask me how I know.
