Just hack your way to the next release adding one more if/else in the already 5 levels deep function.

No no no. Start a complex refactor. During the refactor, find something more important to refactor and start refactoring that without reverting the first refactor. During the second refactor, find another thing that you should have cleaned up first and go clean that up. Then realize that you have hundreds of compile errors and go have a drink.
