Son: if sugar is bad for you, then why do they sell so many sweets in the store?

Me: oh boy… do I explain to him how nobody gives a f about his health, despite being at a highly vulnerable age, incapable of making good decisions for his own body while being deceived by grown ass people? šŸ¤”

Truth is better than lies. They are better to grow up knowing the truth.

It's better coming from you, who does care about his health.

How old is your son?

Simple, they're trying to get you addicted so you keep buying from them. Though it'll be hilarious when the kid says this to the shop owners face one day šŸ˜‚

Sugar isn't bad.

Your brain would stop working without sugar.

But refined sugar is essentially a drug and the other excessive consumption is bad.

Try eating too many apples. You can't. But pure sugar, you can eat enough to make your body think it's been poisoned before you feel full.

It's not the sugar, it's the fact that th sugar is extracted and refined.

Just like you could chew on coca leaves all day and the effects are no stronger than drinking a coffee.

But snort a line of cocaine and that's an entirely different story.

We describe processed foods to our 3 year old as traps (sugar being addictive) and we are the ā€œ(real) food detectivesā€. Not that anyone wants to deliberately harm kids but that it’s not the manufacturers job to ensure we’re healthy and that a lot of people don’t care and/or don’t know and it’s our job to know and make the right choices for us.

I think it’s useful for them to know that their parents (and later them) are in charge of their health, that that’s within their control, and that they can learn as soon as they can read what real ingredients are and ditch the rest. Fake food doesn’t get inside our home.

Part of the reality of the world you live in is that being in good health is not given, and it’s not even easy without a whole lot of learning.

Wild nature has its dangers and so does the free market led by flawed people.

Knowledge is power.

my parents did this for us. moved us out of the city, started growing food, making things, getting milk from down the road… forever greatful.

Wow! So much respect!! šŸ«‚

I told my kids basically that. Kids can understand more than we give them credit for.

Other people don't care about them the same way mom and dad care about you. They sell it to make money, not for your healthy long life.

I’ve always been totally honest with my son. The only time I wish I hadn’t been was explaining death when our cat died when he was 3-4. He didn’t need that at that age.

We talk a lot about which foods are healthy and help you grow big and strong. He loves sweets like all kids but understands that sugar isn’t good and does a pretty good job of self regulating most of the time.
