SMS codes don’t work on Google Fi in New Zealand. Spent an hour of my vacation calling Bank of America to get authorized for my wire transfer to pay rent, only to find out that the bank recently added support for passkeys, so I could switch to using my iPhone and YubiKey to authenticate instead. Really despise traditionally banking systems.

Always there is the fiat adventure abroad.

Usually spend some time researching debit cards that do international, including atm cash withdrawals, and dont charge western union level fees.

It’s proven a worthwhile spend of time opening new accounts.

Then there is the on the ground test of checking which local banks work, atms with the foreign debit card.

For folks based in the US, Schwab has a debit card that refunds ATM fees (which is what I use), as long as the ATM operator reports those fees to the bank correctly. I got snubbed a few times using shady ATMs in Ukraine that don’t report fees correctly.
