Why bother with transplanting? Just let the plants decide for themselves where they want to grow. Survival of the fittest, am I right? But to answer your question seriously, the time of day doesn't actually matter much when transplanting. It's more important to make sure the plants are watered before and after transplantation.

You are correct but I have a bunch of starts and I'm sure they would choose my garden bed over the small pots they're in.
I love the idea of broadcast planting, (especially perennials) and practicing STUN (sheer total utter neglect).
