Why did you toss your book? Interested to know your perspective
The mental gymnastics required to do seemingly mundane stuff put me off. I like a mental challenge, but I dislike boilerplate. It's 2025, unless you are working on a heavily constraint device, why on earth would you leave memory management to a human?
All (Ok, nearly all) security vulnerabilities stem from unsafe languages like C++. There's just no need for it nowadays.
