For nearly a decade, Mu’aawiyah has been advocating for how Bitcoin and Islamic finance should be at the forefront of how we engage in ethical business practices, financial sovereignty, and fairness. A prolific educator, serial entrepreneur, and visionary, he is currently developing tools to empower individuals and businesses to harness Bitcoin as an ethical means of commerce, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all. Mu’aawiyah is part of a growing movement reshaping global finance through a values-based lens, rooted in integrity and justice.

Muslims think very deeply about Bitcoin, will the price go up, will we be in a bull 🐂 market or bear 🐻? Will Michael Saylor buy more or dump his bags?

But what we should be thinking about is, have we paid zakat on it? When do we pay zakat on it? How can we give it in Bitcoin?

Every so often, when I receive money in fiat, I have this mini-dialogue in my head…

“Should I smash buy bitcoin? Or wait until it goes down lower and I get a better price?” And like clockwork, I have to remind myself “I’m not here to ‘make more fiat! I’m here to escape Ribaa and to be self sovereign with my wealth, so when I’m asked on the day of judgement ‘how did you struggle for your deen in this world?’ I can say ‘I avoided Ribaa fiat even everyone around me told me it’s not worth it!!’”

Guys, it’s 100% worth it.

Starbucks

Product => coffee

Banks

Product => fiat in the form of credit

Is it difficult? Yes. But is it a condition to boycott something that it’s “easy” to do? If that’s the case, then where’s the “struggle for the greater cause?”

Whoever boycotts coffee from Starbucks yet does not boycott fiat is lying to themselves … just saying

I just finished chapter 10 in @savingsatoshi! https://savingsatoshi.com

Done, alhamdulillaah.

This was a challenging experience, and worth every step of the way. Loved the story, the tasks, the challenge. It’s worth it if you know python or javascript.

I have to say, however, that the cohorts I did this year with @bitshala_org @CodeOrangeDevs and reading @jimmysong Programming Bitcoin, along with doing all the exercises and tasks in the above went a long way to completing this.

It would have taken me easily more than double the time without that year long intro, maybe triple. So if you know nothing about the inner workings of Bitcoin, never engaged with a node via rpc calls, or have no idea what an OP_CODE is, then maybe read up on those things first.

Besides this...This is a GREAT way to get into Bitcoin development. It will (or should) expand your mind in what you can do with Bitcoin, and the possibilities with this decentralised censorship resistant Halal money for everyone. And if you want to start this journey, check out above mentioned cohort with Bitshala, CodeOrange or Jimmy’s book. Bitcoin development is part knowledge about coding languages, and part Bitcoin procedures and protocols. How to communicate with the network

I just finished chapter 8 in @savingsatoshi! Code your way through the mysteries of bitcoin at https://savingsatoshi.com

This one was a real challenge...Got there in the end

Glad to be a part of this discussion

Tbh, for me, whoever didn’t know the US before now, must be totally blind…not slight against the brother, but I was never under any delusion about the US (or the UK) even before I became Muslim.

I did it, I tamed it, alhamdulillah. Just for you, my dear nostr:npub1drqqpmltrhlc0mr986hwqaceklsdf53dxawf4tuh4ev67q6c4wyscsyx6e , haha. Nah, kidding. It was a workout. Two whole days of workout.

I had no clue about the state of Windows 11, since I haven't touched Windows since XP. This is what you have got to do now if you want to download and install unsigned software on Windows:

(Sorry, screenshots are in German)

Step 1: You download the software like normal.

Step 2: Even though you've already downloaded it, the browser doesn't write it to your hard drive. It yaps about "trust" and stuff. You have got to click "Show more."

Step 3: Only then do a trash icon and a three dots icon show up in the download bar, but just on mouseover.

Step 4: If you click the three dots icon, a context menu pops up, and one of the five options is "Keep."

Step 5: But that's still not it. Another popup comes up where you have got to click the three dots next to the "Delete" button.

Step 6: There, a pulldown menu opens with "Keep anyway" in the nicest design.

Step 7: NOW it finally writes the file to your downloads folder and generously lets you run it.

So you run the setup. But hey, Windows isn't done yet.

Step 8: A blue window pops up yapping about "Defender Smartscreen" with only a "Don't run" button. It's the same blue as the Blue Screen of Death. If it wasn't, they'd probably make it flash red and orange.

Totally user friendly and logical, right? You have got to click the "More info" link...

Step 9: ...so the "Run anyway" button shows up.

Step 10: And only then does the setup program start.

That's some top notch dark UX.

So, what's the deal? I didn't buy a code signing certificate. That costs about 300 to 500 Euros a year. A year! That's why my app got this special treatment.

At the same time:

- Windows 11 Copilot/Recall takes screenshots of everything you do

- Telemetry is almost impossible to fully turn off

- Cortana, OneDrive, Microsoft Account get shoved down your throat

Apple's got a similar system:

Gatekeeper plus Notarization

- Unsigned apps: "Can't be opened because the developer can't be verified"

- User has to right click Open or allow it in System Settings

Costs:

- Apple Developer Account: 99 bucks a year

- With that, you can sign AND notarize (Apple checks the app automatically)

Difference from Windows:

- One time 99 bucks a year for everything (not per certificate)

- Notarization is automated (no hardware token needed)

- Easier to integrate into CI/CD

But:

- Apple reserves the right to remotely block apps

- M1/M2 Macs are even more restrictive

- For open source, Apple's actually a bit cheaper and easier than Windows. But it's the same principle: Pay up or your users see warnings.

Ubuntu Linux has a warning in its app center too, but it still lets you install the software easy. And 'sudo dpkg -i filename.deb' still works in the terminal with no warnings.

It's 2025. This is the state of our home computers.

Well done 👏

Proof of work right there

If anyone wants to join the ‘Learning Bitcoin from command line” cohort. I’m taking part as a TA so all are welcome

https://bitshala.org/cohorts/lbtcl/

Ppl often ask me about the nisaab (& therefore the zakaat) on Bitcoin. The easiest way to see the nisaab is to go to trading view and type the following:

XAUUSD*2.733/BTCUSD

You can copy/paste that if you want, & it will show you how much coin you need to be above the nisaab.

Once you have that value, count 355 days from that point, & if you have stayed above the daily value you see on the side, then you pay zakaat. Not on ramadhaan, but 355 days from the moment you were above that line (assuming you have no other money). Then just pay 2.5% from that.

Well, last year they promised us that it would be uploaded to YouTube. It wasn’t. So I go knows if this year would’ve any different

What this story & similar stories like it fail to capture are the other factors outside of this oversimplified scenario.

It DIDN’T talk about how those men earned their money…What fraction of their wealth their payment was, etc. and I don’t even agree with taxes…

https://xcancel.com/alanjlsmith/status/1994379528320192580

The rich guy paid £50, but if it was 0.001% of his net worth, while the 5th guy paid 30% of his net worth, the story is now VERY different. If the 1st-5th guy struggles to pay their bills, while the 10th guy has multiple houses & a private jet, these are VERY different ppl.

So from a Muslim perspective, what would be a righteous move is if the 10th guy would just say ‘hey guys, this is on me’ and guy 1-9 would say ‘Maa Shaa Allah!!’ And make duaa for him. Everyone winning. This is how it works with us. And the joke is, this is what you see.

Just google search the many MANY videos of Muslims in say Saudi Arabia fighting to pay the bill. That’s ’Karan’, and this civilisation.

“Whoever protects his own self from the selfishness of his own soul will be from the successful ones.”

Just updated my LinkedIn profile with what I’ve done this year so far.

Alhamdulillah, let’s hope I can do good for the world, especially in bringing Muslims to the Bitcoin anti-Ribaa revolution.

A lot can be said, but if we look at Muslims nations globally, the GCC nations seem to be the most successful in multiple sectors, so give Jack his jacket and support your brothers and sisters wherever they are and hold back our tongue from them.

Who said they do? Biden told MBS to stop buying Russian oil, and he said no, I’ll buy it and sell it on.

So what are you talking about?

Saudi just joined a defence pact with Pakistan, mended ties with Iran, demanded Palestine have their own state before considering normalising with Israel.

Maybe you’re not following how things operate there.

I’m actually in a bit of shock tbh at how quickly the west were able to turn Muslim attention away from Gaza, Israel and the west’s manifest support for the genocide towards Muslim leadership as if what the UK and US did and continue to do never happened.

Are Muslim diaspora that sheepish and hyper-emotional that they can’t see the obvious “Bait and switch” going on?

One thing I would say is that ai does help in teaching one how to code certain things if they get stuck. Ai is an aid to learning how to do it yourself, not a replacement of yourself. I’ve learnt Python. And Bash after not knowing anything with it, along with going through some course material and self study. It’s more an issue and concern for teachers than it is for coders. Ai is just that really helpful teacher along with existing learning materials.

I would love to see this chart with the amount multiplied by the price. Just to see if the ‘value’ on the exchanges remains pretty much the same.

Could it be that as the value of the coin goes up, the amount of coin goes down because ppl are maintaining the same fiat value on exchanges?

Never forget who’s doing it, who’s paying for it, who’s providing cover for it, and who’s trying to gaslight you that what we see isn’t happening

Let’s support Ben & Jerry’s ice cream

I’m just saying, friends can roast each other and chat shit, but if there’s a potential for someone to genuinely be struggling with something; a friend should be able to notice the signs and be serious and not act like an asshole. Ppl may not have the confidence to come out that they are struggling with something, and to have their close friends dismiss them may literally have the opposite of what you think.

Ok. I thought the words “kill his friends” meant murder apologies. I wasn’t aware there was another meaning. Sorry, my bad

Exactly…you seem to think that murder is the only option. So simply having a talk to your son doesn’t come to mind?

It’s interesting how your mind went to that as a potential meaning.

We are clearly of different worlds.

And with that I acknowledge that every culture is different.

But best believe, if my son ever had friends like that, I’d put an end to that friendship.

BS. Number one, he was darker than that for sure. Not to mention why he has no hair

This is ones Mempool running Knots vs one running Core.

So for those who say ‘filters don’t work’, well, they seem to be working. So why are we not running filters to keep out the crap ppl want to put on it?

Depends on how they got to this number? Did they consider the mitochondria to be a ‘human cell’ or part of ‘the other’?

Update on my “Bitcoin Developer Journey” learning Bitcoin at the code level, 6 months in…an amazing mission so far, & opened up so many new ideas! But one advice for both learners & educators…TYPES!!!

Allaahu Akbar!! Nothing punished me more than mismatched variable types!! lol.

When something is hex, or bytes, or string, or integer, going from int to str, to bytes, & back again, why we do it, when& don’t get me started on ‘little-endians’ vs ‘big-endians’!

But stick to it, & push through the pain, & pay more attention to understanding error messages.

I hope this would give me an increased ability to discussion Bitcoin from an islamic perspective, combining both knowledges together. And I ask Allaah to Help me make something useful for the ummah.

إن شاء الله، هذا ينفعكم لهذا الشهر المبارك. نسأل الله الثبات وحسن الختام
