The note eventually loaded for me. Now the concept of drinking older wines (and especially comparing to younger versions of the same batch) makes WAY more sense to me.

Absolutely.
All wines change with time, but I think you get more interesting results with unfiltered wines
An easy analogy for me is apple juice. You cannot see through Tropicana apple juice and comparing it to an apple juice that is see through because everything is filtered out is significant the unfiltered has way more taste. For someone who can appreciate wine, it's similar. You remove a major part of a wine's character and body and end up with a more generic and less complex product.
