With all the political disputes, all the overlaps between the players on the stage, we are once again witnessing the function of the media today: they ensure that the stressors remain active, that people from San Francisco to New York, from Miami to Chicago, feel that they have something to do with each other in some way and thus form a kind of nation.

That's the job of the media to maintain a level of stress that doesn't make people drift apart completely but makes them resonate with each other and synchronize their actions. And since each side will feel disadvantaged, they all have something in common: a basic feeling that pulls them further down and prevents them from growing personally. Postmodern mass society is a construct of media synchronization.
