It's important in these early days because adopting Bitcoin is a defection from the existing system, and there are people who will get punished for that. I don't think the average adopter in the long run will need it as much.
Agreed, it's a valuable tool for now. Future on-chain fees likely make it impractical in its current form. Plenty of interesting privacy things going on with payjoin/liquid txs/ecash/etc that'll be way more useful for 99% of people
