In medieval Britain
Anglo Saxon peasantry farmed all of the animals and yet but ate very little meat, and spoke in a germanic tongue.
Norman rulers only ever ate the meat, had nothing to do with the animals, and spoke a francophonic tongue.
That is why in English we have two different words for
a) The animal (usually derived from said germanic root)
b) The meat (from the francophonic root)
ex.
Chicken vs Poultry
Cow vs Beef
Deer vs Venison
Pig vs Pork
And so on.
The importance of meat is evident even in the language we use.
