I couldโ€™ve sworn โ€œboostโ€ = โ€œbroadcastโ€

Amethyst uses "Boost" for reposts (not sure if any other client uses that)

But since there's also the sats-sharing boost now, it can be a bit confusing.

I canโ€™t hear bump n not automatically think of

I was just confused because I thought "boost" was a synonym for "repost"

I thought broadcast was for relaying the note to all of your relays.

This is what I thought. Doesnโ€™t it broadcast the note to relays the post was not posted on?

exactly thatโ€™s what I consider to be a โ€œboostโ€ of someoneโ€™s note

I couldโ€™ve sworn someone passed on this knowledge to me when I first arrived ๐Ÿคฃ

No dude, a broadcast just sends the note out to more relays, it doesnโ€™t โ€œboostโ€

The note to the top of everyoneโ€™s chronological feed. A โ€œrepostโ€(boost) not only broadcasts a note to your relays, it also changes the chronological time on the relays putting it at the top of everyoneโ€™s feed.

Broadcasting is used to get a note saved on more relays and therefore make it more searchable.

Renote/repost/boost is used to increase engagement.

sending it out to more relays is literally what โ€œboostโ€ means to me

โ€œBoosting the note to the top of everyoneโ€™s feedโ€ is not what I have in mind when I say โ€œboostโ€ what I have in mind when I say โ€œboostโ€ is giving the note a boost to be picked up by my relays, you could argue that renotes and broadcasts are both ways of โ€œboostingโ€ and Iโ€™d agree ๐Ÿซก

Yah but thatโ€™s not what everyone using the term means, they literally mean renote because thatโ€™s what their client calls renoting, like how Damus uses the term repost. Theyโ€™re โ€œboostingโ€ the post for more engagement.

Boost- help, encourage, lift from below, amplify.

Broadcasting doesnโ€™t really do any of those things.

how could you honestly say what everyone means when using the term with absolute certainty my fren have you surveyed every single nostrich that uses this term ? also Iโ€™d disagree โ€œbroadcastingโ€ definitely amplifies a note, is it not now in more relays than it was when posted by the author ? n how does that not mean that it reaches a wider audience that it wouldnโ€™t have otherwise ? (npubs who werenโ€™t connected to the authors relays)

Broadcast your first note, no more engagement will happen itโ€™s buried at the bottom of the timeline.

Repost your first note, now itโ€™s on new relays and at the top of everyoneโ€™s feed. The definition of boost means lift from below, amplify.

Literally an entire week has gone by with people calling for a boostathon and boostr with people reposting notes calling them boosts?

so lemme just tell you a personal experience and see if it makes any sense to you n maybe you can try it out sometime, a couple months back i used a client I donโ€™t use anymore it was the one made by rabble I think, there was a feature that allowed you to create a note to only 1 relay of your choosing, i tried it out n the note was on that 1 relay for maybe 1 minute until someone on that relay decided lemme fuck with Sleepyโ€™s test note n broadcast it, it wasnโ€™t on 1 relay anymore which wasnโ€™t visible to the rest of the network, now it was fully visible to most n engagement started flooding in as replies said test failed we can see the note, if thatโ€™s not amplifying idk what is. Either way Iโ€™m not technical enough to continue down this conversation ๐Ÿคฃ Iโ€™d love to hear from more technical people who know the process in which it works n allow them to figure out the correct terminology for it and Iโ€™ll happily listen to their points n change my mind if it makes sense to me.

I think Semisol is super technical and he loves these kinds of arguments

note - the original post

reply - A note reply to the original note, with content after the note id referenced. Can be threaded as it references all prior notes

quote-note - A note you create that reference's another note, and adds personal context before the note id. Starts a new note thread

boost - When you see someone else's note, and you create a new note that includes the note id, and no new content

renote - A self boost of your own note, without new content

broadcast - When you see someone else's note, and you send it to the relays you can write to, without creating a new note

Vic has spoken.

that form of boost Iโ€™ve never done myself or seen

so dis must be why I donโ€™t understand what you guys mean

cause the term boost I know of isnโ€™t anything new from a week ago or any of that lol this is something I heard multiple times on my first week here a year ago

Agree except 'renote' should be 'self-boost' or something that connects it to boosting rather than connecting it to noting.

Boost isnโ€™t in the NIPs vocabulary so use it in the way that makes the most sense to you!

So why donโ€™t we merge the two buttons into one?
