Hey tech savvy people, ELI5: how come relays don’t run out of space with all the notes we’re publishing?

I understand that none of them are storing large files, hence why we upload images and paste the links instead, but still, all of those notes must weigh something, right?

I'm sure it depends on the particular relay and implementation, but I imagine relays can drop old notes from their storage...

They're filling up slowly. My relay has gained about 4GB in the past 2 weeks or so.

This is a 100GB disk on my relay. You can see how quickly it's been filling up.

That’s surprising. Do you plan on buying more space or just deleting old posts?

I'm undecided about that. On the one hand, deleting events from the DB that are more than 90 days old would definitely stop the DB from growing too quickly. On the other hand, there needs to be somewhere that all these notes are preserved in perpetuity so that they don't disappear. I've received about $120 worth of Bitcoin to my donation address in my relay description, so if the donations keep coming in I'll just keep expanding the storage space. It costs $10/100GB/month for storage and an additional $40ish for the server itself.

Wow! How do you plan to deal with that? Can you just drop old notes? And if so, what happens if all relays follow that strategy? Will that mean that notes that are too old will be lost forever?
