He doesn't hate Merlot, it's just his ex wife's favorite wine and he doesn't want to drink it because of her.
The movie single handedly changed grape production in the US. Way more Pinot. Way less Merlot. Massive implications. No joke

Absolutely. Pinot sky rocketed and Merlot ranked and is still down. When I served it in a tasting 50% of people would quote that line
