NIP-05 verification isn't exactly a spam filter, but it does filter out a LOT of spam. Look at how the disk space on my relay started rising once the spammers found it, and then went back to normal as soon as I started enforcing NIP-05 verification to write events.

Depends on the relay implementation that you're running. I'm using this one: https://github.com/scsibug/nostr-rs-relay.git

There's a setting for it in config.toml
