The quality department thought I was crazy!

That was their response to a product non-conformity. The part under their review did not fit the drawing specifications.

However, the job of Cognizant engineering is to protect form, fit and function and to understand when dimensions are important, and when they’re not.

This is the function of the material review board, or otherwise known as MRB some know it as in NCMR (Non-Conforming Material Review).

Parts don’t always have to be scrapped if out of tolerance if the tolerance does not affect overall part performance.

MRB is vitally important in the legacy aerospace industry when parts are no longer made, and very hard to procure.

Every effort must be made to save legacy aircraft parts for National Defense.

There are usually procedures regarding Non-conformities. Usually the design authority can give a “use as is” disposition…

I’m afraid those terms can never be assumed.

I am not sure what we are assuming here. Some manufacturers have procedures regarding non-conformities. The Quality department can write a Non-conformity report (NCR) and the engineering department gives a disposition which is then approved by MRB.

Parts can be reworked, scraped or Use as is.

It’s a fact not an assumption.

License form be terms can never be assumed, and must always be according to the most recent version of licensing terms, considering it’s up to the creator and license defined, and when not defined or not clear, the licensing terms can never be assumed and must be requested from the creator. Without exceptions.
