Nobody expects an analyst to be a good programmer, but we should expect them to be able to use the basic tools, write a simple program or some easy SQL statements or a flowchart, write a well-structured bug report or change request, etc.

Otherwise, they will literally have no clue what anyone is talking about at the daily and you need to ask yourself what you need them for.

This is true. We just hired an analyst that had software development, agile certifications, Java and Python in is resume..

He comes to me regularly wondering the status of his projects and can't execute the scripts I've given him. Highly educated/credentialed.... not worth a shit.

Come to find out, he became a scrum master out of survival because he couldn't write code.
