Do you put this in gardens?

Pitch a few buckets of wood chips though it AFTER every biochar crush.

EVERY.

Ask me how I know.

I just opened it up and scraped out the sludge, but putting some chips through is a good idea.

If you have that much sludge the char is also too wet. Give it another day to dry. Tera Preta is not built in a day.

No it worked out pretty well, prefer that to a lot of dust.

Hubby and I just learning about making biochar and getting set up to do it too. Any tips, things that you would do differently starting out now that you’re doing it ? πŸ™πŸ»β˜•οΈπŸ˜Š

Super simple, burn wood with no airflow coming in through the bottom. You want the flames at the top, heating up underneath. Usually I’m piling wood on constantly.

When flames die down, hose it with water until no smoke.

Crush the biochar into rice size or so. I’m using a wood chipper. Then you can charge the biochar, putting in water, compost, etc. that will make it better, i spread everywhere both ways.

That's a great idea for crushing the char. πŸ‘πŸ‘

Yup, you can make it damp char, but have to scrape machine - limited dust. Super dry char quick processing, bit dusty.
