Feel like rebranding "followers" to "connections" or something like that would be a healthy thing for the internet. "Followers" implied a kind of awkward hierarchical relationship, mostly meant for advertisers and personal brands.

It is heirachical though. If you follow someone and they don't follow you back. You ARE a follower. If you both follow each other, then sure, it's a connection.
How can it be a "connection" if it is only one way?
Adding an npub to my kind 3 just means I'll see that npub's posts in my feed. We've not necessarily made any kind of mutual connection and may have no relationship to one another at all.
All that it means is that I am interested in seeing what that npub has to say.
If it worked by sending some kind of request to connect that had to be approved by the npub I was trying to connect with, then you might be on to something.

"Connect" has a relationship implication in the context of people connecting with one another that isn't implied when talking about nodes on a network.
More importantly, a personal connection is something stronger and more meaningful than what is happening when a user adds an npub to their kind 3. They may have no personal connection to that npub at all. It just means they want that npub's notes to show up in their home feed.
Observe/ing => you follow someone/your following list
Observers => followers
Friend => you both "follow" each others

"Friend" are fine, even if real ones are stronger connection.
It is also a way to be different than any other social media, and it is fine.
You don't "influence" friend, you share your point of view.
"Influencers" are for sheep that "follow" a "chief" voice without having to think by their own.
"Connection" can be misunderstand with login logout feature or with relay connections...
It is not a rebranding but a way to show people here it is also different connection not only based on money, like tweeter was at the beginning.

Agree, and I would even call it to "subscriptions", because I'm just reading what people were and it a word well used before the Internet.
Also "connection" sounds bi-directional, while subscription is a better representation of reality: unidirectional, as me subscribing to your messages don't mean you subscribe to mine
