I've heard protonmail is only encrypted in between protonmail addresses, is that correct?

Yes. Use GPG/PGP tools to encrypt yourself and send over gmail. Same same.

No. It supports any email that uses pgp.

The receiver has to support end to end encryption, not only Protonmail accounts. But Gmail and other clouds don't support this for obvious reasons (they are data perverts)

You can still use pgp with any email account manually by using a mail client with pgp support.
