When I hear stories like “this guy invented a free or almost free energy device” and then his patent was bought or his designs were stolen and buried by evil corporations or he got killed… I think they’re just psyops.

In times of Nikola Tesla totally possible. But today when there’s the internet, cameras everywhere, etc… Unlikely.
