TL;DR You had indentured servitude to pay off debts etc. for a very set period of time. It was not some scarlet letter that followed you around beyond that, didn't extend to your offspring, you couldn't be involuntarily sold off into it, and you couldn't be rounded up and forced into it because you look like a poor Irish/German/whatever person that had that as their default status. That's just the main points of why the argument is fallacious. Again, IOW, it is a BS talking point.
