i built this 4kWh battery 5 years ago. if treated well, it can last for 5 more. but all of these kinds of batteries are made in China, and may become prohibitively expensive. at least for a while.

im going to start looking for locally available stuff…

is this for back-up power?

Looks interesting. What're you using the energy for? Is this to store power you've collected with solar panels?

Also, do you roughly recall your upfront costs to set this all up?

I think there are iron Edison batteries still made in the USA. They are nickel and iron and are rebuildable with simple electrolyte changes. I haven't kept up on them recently. If main use they would be good. Can be fully discharged without damage. I believe they used to lose about 1 percent of charge per day but if your solar is sized right that might not be an issue.
