Yes possible.

If we buy decentralized e-sims.

Not sure if its implemented yet, from what I've heard/read, but Damus was (is?) going to have an update where the user will be a relay themselves, in a local sense though, so I'm not sure how difficult it would be to make it non-local.

that would be great

nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z was working on something like this a while back

We might want to have that working if shit really hits the fan

i don't know how governments would ban nostr though. you ban 1 domain and boom another on pops up. clients and relays would always be popping up. plus, people would be running clients on their phones and home computers. it's a game of whack-a-mole. it can be hindered, but not banned, imo.

Don't need a ban, just a threat of severe punishment like imprisonment would be enough to scare off many relay operators.

It would have to be a blanket global ban though right?

Federal law enforcement has a wide reach on the web. All they need is to cooperate to take down a few key relays abroad and that will send a signal that anyone is up for grabs.

Personally, I think they’ll be up against it not only logistically but also legally. They’ll have to be extremely specific in relation to what a relay is and how it’s “bad” without crossing into other perfectly legal uses and definitions. But who knows. I’m no expert.

“it does not rely on P2P techniques, therefore it works.”

yeah..

if each user could easily (I mean easy like literally click one button) self-host their own relay and be their own backend, the result would be very similar.

each user connects a client to their own relay which talks p2p to other users' relays.

if you're familiar with urbit, the concept is similar. personal servers, 1:1 user:server.
