Ideally don't bother with markdown. Kind 1 notes (I.E. notes on Twitter clone apps) are supposed to be plain text.
My brain interprets markdown code natively, so I'm still gonna use it.

Yeah, feel free to put in symbols, just don't expect all clients to interpret it. Symbols still have meaning in plain text in moderation.
