Türkiye doesn’t observe daylight saving time and my teacher friend is really upset about it. She’s been complaining that the day now starts in complete darkness and her students have their first class before dawn, in pitch black winter mornings.

Both options aren't great IMO. I think our actual days should be shorter so we are granted a bit of a hibernation break. So your friends kids go to school after dawn at a reasonable hour, but still come home before the sun sets too. Same for work and everything.

Actually, since school ends at noon either way, they still get home before sunset. I don’t know. I rarely wake up before 8:30 AM, so it never really affected me. But I keep hearing lots of complaints from people who have early morning jobs.
In high school I remember being in my second class by the time the sun rose, and then I wouldn't get home until after the sun set. Have worked many jobs like that too. And people wonder why folks get so depressed in the winter!
I feel lucky I am at a point in life now where I sleep in until the sun rises, it's a good life 🥰
Same. The sunlight makes me happy and I'm lucky to enjoy it.
Daylight savings doesn't make your day longer. There's the same amount of daylight hours in the season regardless. All it changes it what the clock says. Your teacher friend is mad that winter exists hahaha
Lol, it will be miracle to have extra amount of daylight. We experienced both cases. With DST the morning light starts 07:30AM in peak winter, without DST it starts in 08:30AM. That's the only difference.
