Well you can install Start9 OS on any old laptop that you have too, and it's cheaper !

Old workstations are great too. Lenovo Thinkstation Tiny models are a nice size. I used to put a ton of these in businesses, they are solid performers. Currently using an HP as my Umbrel node.

Yep this is what I did got an old Dell Latitude laptop and upgraded the ram and SSD and flashed Start9 OD. Cost me maybe €120.

How big of an ssd would one need?

2TB now some say

I went 1tb. Go for 2 or more πŸ˜‚

If you intend to run a full Bitcoin node on there with electrum etc plus store photos I would go straight for 2tb

If you are just using it as a server for passwords, photos etc it depends on how much data you want to put on there.

This is what i plan to do. Already have an old mini pc. Just need to save some funds to get a big enough harddrive πŸ’ͺ

I would bump the RAM too. I'm finding 4GB limiting, plan to upgrade ASAP.

I had a 6 year old laptop sitting at home with 1To HDD, I upgraded the RAM to 12Go (added 8Go to the initial config), and it’s working perfectly !

If you are doing Start9 here is the list of known good DIY hardware. If I was you I would get an SSD and at least 8gb ram.

I know :) I have an old thinkpad running Umbrel + Debian for all the bitcoin things. It’s not a problem. The thing is than I want one of these plug-and-play nodes sold by Start9 or Umbrel… Iβ€˜m like a big kid, I don’t want brokkoli, I want my Play Station πŸ˜‚πŸ€£
