That's like opening a restaurant, offering food for free, and expecting people to pay as much as they like.

Not exactly. Food has an incremental cost. Not only in raw materials but also time to prepare and serve.
The idea with #v4v digital content is that it scales. The incremental cost of each copy is essentially zero.
You hope that enough people zap you that it makes it worth your while. And/or enough people appreciate it that it makes it worth your while, even though appreciation doesn’t pay the bills.
