What are the chances you're able to locate/access/read the words?
Someone breaks into your house...
They can't get past your encrypted Coldcard secured by a pin.
But they can just take your 24 words - written in plain text - and restore your bitcoin in a new wallet
The solution?
Encryption. 
How do you hide the encryption key you use to encrypt the mnemonic?
You disperse them geographically.
The difference is that you don't have to trust the trusted parties.
They can't see your balance.
They can't access the info.
They have no idea what's hidden behind the encryption.
They are laminated QR codes that require a password paired to unlock.
Uhm it seems that you are adding tremendous complexity to your setup, SSS is already considered too risky in general, this is even riskier.
Imagine you cannot access one piece, or that you forget one/x password.
It plugs into a very easy to follow inheritance plan.
You can duplicate the QR codes. You could have 10 distributed that unlock the same secret.
Multi sig. Distribute keys among HW and location. Leave a treasure map incase you die unexpectedly.
You can distribute the laminated encrypted QR codes and make as many copies of each. Better than traditional hardware multi sig. Lose keys for two devices and you are hooped
Yes that's a great option.
The second best option.
The main (and only) flaw is that you have to trust others with two of your keys. Or you have to have traces of bitcoin laying around your house.
Encrypted and distributed backups solves both.
I worry that if I over complicate things, if I get hit by a bus, then what chance will my family have? Steel, encrypted files, multisig… my spouse doesn’t want to understand this yet, and my kids are too young. I know everything is a risk and trade off, but I’ve never found a strategy that felt right on this.

pass phrases pretty much solve that too and i think easier / more flexible than encrypted SD
Passphrases are a great option but do not compare to encrypted backups.
They are easier, but they are not more flexible than superbacked.
Plus, easy isnt always the answer when you're securing the greatest asset in human history.

Does this not entail taking your 12/24 words into the digital realm? something I'm keen to avoid doing.
It's done on a laptop with a removed hard drive, read only USB running the software, and disconnected from the internet.
Fully airgapped.
Arguably more secure than a hardware device from a manufacturer.
You are correct in that doing this without proper precaution could be disastrous.
