As part of our currently nightly movie streak, we watched One Battle After Another.

Dicaprio, Penn, Del Toro, etc. A (very long) dark comedy-thriller about far-left terrorists and white supremacists.

Neither me nor my husband were a fan of this one at all.

-Didn't like or sympathize with almost any character (other than the teenager).

-But I also didn't find it that funny or interesting, and no character really captured a scene.

In a movie like No Country for Old Men, I didn't particularly get emotionally attached to any character either, but they're all super interesting on-screen, especially the villain. Penn plays a villain here (Colonel Lockjaw) that is both menacing and goofy, but while the writing and acting of Hans Landa in Inglorious Bastards really nails that combo, I didn't feel that way for Lockjaw. It was more jarring.

Overall acting was fine, given the quality of the actors. But no role was particularly memorable. Nothing really stood out for the cinematography or the musical score, and I didn't particularly like the writing. And several aspects seemed unrealistic in what feels like it's trying to be a fairly realistic movie.

I suspect the main issue is that on one hand, they want to capture that kind of dark-funny nihilistic vibe that several Coen brothers movies have (e.g. Fargo). But they don't quite want to fully commit to that nihilism either, and instead really do want us to emotionally attach to several of the characters here, and straddling that line didn't work for me.

why does this movie feel like a setup for some kind of civil war in the US

Hollywood does love itself some good predictive programming.

Seeding their drivel into our consciousness to help create that in our collective “reality”

Who could have predicted that a plot built on culture war propaganda wouldn’t turn out great?

Agreed. I didn’t know what to make of this movie. I inherently don’t agree with left or extremists. So I never rooted for any character to win. Felt sorry for penn’s character. 😬

Felt like the movie was made as a jab at the current political scenario in the US but they tried portraying it in a comically straightforward way to the point where the audience have nothing to wonder about.

1 time watch at best.

Great review Lyn, thanks for sharing. Perhaps you’re too based to fully empathise and connect with the far left terrorists. I would be interested to read a review from an extreme left activists to see how they enjoyed it.

Haven’t seen it yet, but your thoughts remind me of Blood Meridian, one of my favourite novels (another McCarthy like No Country). Maybe that nihilistic dark tone translates better on the page than screen where not rooting for anyone, and everyone’s a shade of “bad” is harder in a movie cause we’re conditioned to expect at least one protagonist to root for?

Love the movie reviews, keep them coming!

I think No Country translated well to the screen. And Burn After Reading is filled with unlikable idiots but I think it’s hilarious.

This movie at least had the teenager I could root for, but overall, there wasn’t enough comedy or on-screen gravitas and fascination to offset the unlikability of most of the characters.

Been watching comedies lately pre-2000.

I thought the movie was incisive and hilarious. Ultimately I caught the sentiment of grief, and the human element of looking back and wishing for other things. The car chase scene I thought was amazing too. Phenomenal editing, plus the soundtrack.

The car chase aspect, specifically the use of hills, was the most interesting part to me.

Hmmm, watch this couple a nights ago.... After I'd started it like two weeks ago... I guess I wasn't in the moviewatching vibe and I guess this didn't capture me in the first 10 was minutes all that much. Now that you've shared this review, I can agree with you. I think I got a little emotional a couple of times. But overall it left me with a "Meh... Whatever" kinda feeling.

Same, turned it off about 10 minutes in

I actually enjoyed the movie. Well, I never have great expectations anyway in movies.

Watched half and was mildly interested... Shrugged my shoulders and turned it off. Lol.

Ideologically lite compared to children of men or anything else really

I couldn’t stand it after 10 minutes.

Neither could we, but we stuck with it anyway.

I thought the ending was a bit cheesey and shite.

But I enjoyed it as a whole.

I agree that most of the characters weren’t very likeable. I had high hopes as it has solid reviews

Bugonia was pretty fun

Thanks for sharing this insightful content here on Nostr. We are so lucky.

Thank you. I watched this

in cinema and I felt the same way. How many statements can you fit into a movie.

I did not like it either, but for different reasons. They tried to portray a 60’s and 70’s era communist revolutionary as this goofy dope fiend with a good heart trying to raise his daughter the right way. A proper understanding of the history of this era shows these people were insanely violent, with the blood of innocents on their hands. To make things worse, they ended up in leading positions in academia and politics (e.g. Angela Davis, Bill Ayers), not as outcasts. Lockjaw character is a caricature of leftist tropes about their adversaries.

I think it was a decent action movie but just not anywhere close to something in quality like The Brutalist from last year, which was sensational

We are the boundaries between socialism, revolution, black lives matter and immigration. It is propaganda fruit salad!!
