Any amateur radio operators on Nostr yet?

HF 20-40M preferred, enough length and power to go the distance.

Thinking about relaying some notes over FSK/PSK this week just to make a point…

I really want to start messing around with SDR, I just haven't bought any equipment yet.

I think the Hackrf One rig looks pretty awesome, but I haven’t bought one yet.

Toy

Not even a good entry level SDR? What do you recommend? HAM isn’t really my goal, listing to GMRS is more my aim.

cheapear than a raspberry

I could put an antenna in my bedroom window and probably blast signals across the whole valley.

Radio stations, now that’s something straight from a science fiction novel.

Fathom running a radio station.

So, what are you guys doing today?

🤭

Yup! My father has multiple repeaters on top of mountains across the southwest. We were using autopatch to make phone calls via HAM radios years before the first cell phone was released.

Autopatch?

Yup! My dad has the equipment on mountaintops so as long as you can connect to the repeater on the mountain top you can make a phone call. Now that cell phones are the norm autopatch isn't that cool anymore but back in the day it was insane to be able to make a phone call via your HAM radio. Only downside to autopatch is anyone on your freq could listen to your phone call. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopatch

I'm gonna read up, I love old tell communication tech!

For sure. HAM radio is the most reliable form of communication over distances especially during a natural disaster. When the internet goes down, cell phone towers don't work, HAM radio never fails. Also a very secure way of communicating if you have your system setup correctly.

Which country are you in? Because regarding security I have some concerns when it comes fk HAM?

Could you clarify please

Very cool!

In the United States, autopatch users are required to hang up if they encounter music on hold, as the Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit music on amateur radio frequencies.

Damn no breaking it down to Opus One ;(

>prohibit music

Well that fucking sucks. What's the appeal again?

How enforced is this rule anyway?

I mean if you are going to have an emergency comma network I can see wanting to not well have shit on it

Music is not "shit"

So, was it originally meant for emergency comma then? I thought it was just a free use spectrum.

What type of hardware is needed to get started? Can you use any radio by software tech? This has been on my growing (sadly) “list of shit I need to master because the world is teetering.”

If you need to ask…

Forget about it

🥑

Just sitting in a bar chatting. But I get it. Thanks for all the info.

It's relatively inexpensive to get into the hobby (truly, in its simplest form it's just a radio and an antenna, you can really TX (transmit) on anything). If you're just looking to get started (and in the US) you can get your technicians license (three classes of license, tech general and extra) and start transmitting and building. US is one of the only countries that says "here's a license and a call sign, go have fun".

Love the photo 😂

I wonder if any succeasful love relationshios were formed over HAM

Unlikely, XYLs are not shack accessories

Some terrestrial species we knew as humans tried to dirty #zapbomb and were extinct from existence.

Cool👀

🤣

Fellow ham checking in. I see you choice bands, preferred mode?

FT8 when I'm at work (fun to quickly make contacts and get "wallpaper" QSL cards). Usually on 20m or 18.

Straight to general 2 years ago for me. Got my WAS on ft8. Analog and DMR on the local repeaters of course. I want to start to branch out to something new next, maybe some SSB. I'm on a not so random long wire so plenty of band options.

Would just use PSKR on 40-20m

well I do 11m, and do have a 10-12m capable radio, but dont usually plug them in :)

Is that a GMDSS station? 😃

I gotta take another exam to reach you. U know I’m sick of you right? DM call sign?

Yeah, I'm an Extra Class operator in the US, and a volunteer examiner. If anyone here had any questions feel free to DM.

Cool, do you have a HF rig?

Always a ham poking around on these decentralized protocols. Love to see it. Also extra here and can listen far and wide in the southeast US.

I do yeah, Icom 7300

Have you used fldigi?

Your post is getting a lot of shares.

My dad’s prefix was PT7VME. I used to watch him talking at random trying to find someone to talk to. It’s a really cool culture, very helpful and smart people, similar to our Bitcoin and Nostr community is

Yes, but i’m half way trough the course to get my licence so no call name yet. Absolutely eager to start experimenting with it. I Saw something that you said about using the low frequencies for sending transactions. I’m close to salt water so that would be even better in my case. But, just started to dig into all of this.

I think I'm already following you on Nostr. N4GN here. npub1t0ttenlstqhx7nvqkrj9p822qygz2evpjt86nrep0a8js2x7r7wqe5g9s3

I'm in KP4 now, using the NP4TT club call. But haven't put up any antennas yet. Give me a few days if no other takers.

Unfortunately, no matter which guy it is, you’re gonna hear about the latest doctor appointment. 😂
