The relay network is just our flimsy V1. Once people get used to sign stuff with private keys in self custody, the transfer of the data can happen in hundreds of different ways. The most revolutionary part of Nostr is to get people signing. Everything else will fall into place in time.

what is an example of not-relay? this sounds cool in theory but I'm skeptical of any technical solution that doesn't at least have a proof of concept

We already send events via push notifications, which is like a relay, but not really. P2P transfere are also coming. Lots of testing happening these days.
