If anyone asks for ID info/pictures online, always immediately ask if it is legally required or if they just want to have it. Shockingly often people will admit it’s not required and they have alternatives that may not be too much more effort.

Great tip. I recently experienced this with an accountant I had been dealing with for a while. One year he sent me an email saying before he could submit my return he needed all sorts of proof of identity documents sent to him and that this was a requirement before he could proceed. I replied asking him what specifically had changed that prevented him from submitting without these documents as he had done in previous years and he just sent a very short email back saying oh don’t worry about it I will just submit everything. Suddenly they were not needed. No further explanation than that.
