Self custody lightning isn't scalable to even a 1 billion people. We know that now even if many don't want to admit it.

It doesn't mean that lightning is not useful for scaling Bitcoin. It doesn't mean that lightning is a scam. That's as intellectually dishonest as saying 3rd party custodial solutions aren't required.

Scaling Bitcoin to 8 billion people will require tradeoffs at the individual level. I'd rather push the trade offs to the edge of the network (to the individual) rather than implement them at the base layer.

There are no risk free changes to the base layer.
