Well, I know some scholars who said it in the 90's or even earlier but they said out of necessity (darura) it is allowed to use it. Now with Bitcoin the necessity is gone so the question emerges again.

The main fatwa from back in the 70’s says that fiat is halal and it’s like using anything as a medium of exchange. But it doesn’t seem to be clear if they understood how fiat is issued back then from the wording of the fatwaa. So maybe it needs to be re-looked out in an official capacity much the same way it was initially looked into.

I think once we reach mass adoption stage of bitcoin that conversation will organically happen amongst the scholars. InshaAllah!

Until then focus on financial education is key! I feel like we are still so early.
