IMO, kind:14 are DMs. If we want to do emails, lets just create a new event kind for it so we can fully develop the use case without the restrictions from the DM world.

The top priority when building nostr mail is that it needs and must have a bridge to SMTP/IMAP when it launches.

Maybe slowly it becomes an email contender one day.

Email is dying and needs to be replaced. Moving the bitcoin-dev mailing list to nostr would be a big deal. Way way bigger than changing OP_RETURN policy.

I like the idea of a built in email.

I’m more of a Lens user, but with their recent upgrade, a lot of functionality has been lost(temporarily I hope).

Anyway, like nostr, Lens is a protocol build for social interaction. To me, this means that chat, email, short messages(like you mention here), and places to share media are necessity.

I’m a writer, and I don’t have the time to set up a dozen apps for everything I need, but nostr could easily handle a large portion of my needs.

Email and DM is different though; email is message centric, DM is relation centric.

The base view of email is every incomming message listed in chronological order; every message is its own thing (aside from that it can have a subject); the people involed (recievers, cc, bcc) are all liked to the message. In DM its the other way around, there messages are linked to the leople involved.

So if you are making a new thing/kind anyway, and your idea behind it is 'email', then please just copy the most basic bitch email UI pls. It also sends a signal to the user in terms of expectations; in what timeframe people might respond, formality, formatting, attachments etc. There is all this implied etiquette differences surrounding email vs DM

I need DMs as well so i wanted to unify them somehow without having to create two separate apps. Even if it was a different view. Maybe they are too different?

They are different. Email is a letter, with a subject, CC, BCC. So those would have to be part of the spec.

And subsequently in use:

You alway start them with a greeting, you finish them with a regard

Messaging also informs you if the other person is online or not. Basically i have hotmail vs MSN in mind here

Personally i would not mind it being seperate apps, probably prefer it. But dont listen to me in this regard...i am a barbarian that still uses winamp

Would just be weird to have a dm button and a mail button on the toolbar. I think it would make sense if there was just a conversations app where you can have one on one convos in a linear DM view, with another tab for inbox, which is just your typical email inbox with to/cc/etc

Messaging with proof of work integrate to reduce spam is long overdue.

Plus, email privacy sucks.
