The problem is that technology changed the meaning of the phrase. One used to look at the horizon and be inspired by a role model, perhaps someone great.

That was the dream to follow, now technology destroyed most traditional jobs or render them cheap labor while at the same time elevated mediocre people to the level of kings.

No wonder a lot of souls got confused.
