Ffs this shouldn’t be happening here.

It has been the whole time unfortunately

Web browsers do this too?

Can Damus put a stop to this?

The best fix on an individual level is a VPN

nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s is right, your IP is all over the internet, it’s not a Nostr specific thing

Although, since this is a social media platform, it’s a bit more frustrating because ideally it shouldn’t be so easy for others to find and post it

It's not a platform, tho, it's just a protocol. You would need to think up a change to the protocol, to prevent this, and I can't think of any.

If you can’t run a VPN we could use an image proxy

Might just be the solution.

You may also check https://github.com/Yonle/bandwidth-hero-proxy which do image compression for web browsing

Im surprised when people are surprised that your ip is leaked when you use the internet. So the solution is to just use an image proxy and have them track everyones IP? People should use VPNs if they are worried about this stuff.

I guess you can turn logs off.

Yeah, but then there's centralization and liability. Exactly what Nostr stands against.

The point of Nostr is that any generous soul can pay for a VPS and run a small simple-as-a-rock Nostr relay and help decentralize social media **without** liability.

But if using Nostr implies going through centralized proxies that consume large amounts of bandwidth and storage, and therefore they **must** be paid somehow... Well, then you either got the government's eyes on those (now) fewer "relay plus" owners, or someone willing to pay the bills in exchange for some juicy big data.

And this is a problem of the internet, not Nostr specific.

My advice would be to just use Tor. Clients should come with socks5 support so that people can browse through Tor with them. Problem solved.

Sure I agree with you to a point though, I don’t want this advertised all over Nostr.

If someone is keen enough to go searching for it, then they have to put in the effort, having it posted here like this isn’t good and I’m not happy about it-just saying.

So you would prefer the data be in the hands of the same suspicious people but everybody being unaware of it?

How is that "better"?

you’d think the letters TCP/IP might give it away. 🤓

Il y a tellement de choses qui ne *devraient *pas mais Marie nous n'y pouvons rien car la plupart des gens s'en foutent de la prospection de leur données personnelles ou utlisent les outils de la technologie sans connaître réellement les dessous

I have a vpn but it doesn’t change the ip. It just provides weak encryption. If you don’t expose it correctly it’s also a big risk

Not sure what you mean, but going through a vpn does change your outbound ip address.

https://docs.pivpn.io/

I don’t think this changes outbound. But I do have a leak

With my isp not with Nostr

hmmmm you need to check your configurations then.

Welcome to the internet.

It was happening from the very beginning. This is the reason why nostriches using vpn.
